1. Hotel Bristol: 19th Century Elegance
If you’re looking for a Salzburg Old Town Hotel that combines historical charm with contemporary luxury, Hotel Bristol Salzburg is the place for you. In addition to hosting royalty and celebrities like the Habsburg Emperor, Sigmund Freud, and the cast of The Sound of Music, this five-star Hotel next to Mirabell Garden was the first building with electricity in Salzburg. As soon as you walk into the Hotel, you’ll be transported to an entirely new era because of its historical details and fine artwork.
Besides being a relic, Hotel Bristol is the perfect place to explore Salzburg’s old town. It’s on the right side of the old town of Salzburg, the less historic side but located between Mirabell Garden and Mozart’s residence; there is no better place to start exploring the old town of Salzburg. As I mentioned, Salzburg’s old town is small. Only a minute or two away, depending on when the traffic light turns green, is the bridge connecting the old town’s right side with the left side of the old town and Getreidegasse, the most famous street in Salzburg.
2. Hotel am Mirabellplatz: Budget Hotel Perfection
The Hotel am Mirabellplatz is a great budget-friendly option located just a few steps away from the Hotel Bristol. The Hotel is 200 meters or 2 minute’s walk from the Hotel Bristol, offering a more affordable option while still providing a great location in the heart of Salzburg’s old town. The Hotel has a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was built as a city palace for the family of Prince-Archbishop Paris Lodron. Since 1816, the Hotel has been welcoming guests.
It is now run by the Imlauer family, focusing on service and sustainability. The Hotel’s location is unbeatable, just across the street from Mirabell Palace and Gardens and a short walk from the famous Linzergasse and Getreidegasse. The Hotel’s rooms are all unique and blend historic charm with modern amenities like air conditioning, making it perfect for travelers who want to experience the history and beauty of Salzburg’s old town while staying in a comfortable and well-located hotel.
3. Wolf Dietrich: Old-Fashioned Charm
The Hotel Wolf-Dietrich is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Salzburg’s old town, offering couples a romantic and intimate stay. The Hotel is split into two buildings, the Residenz and the Altstadthotel. While they’re not connected, they’re located just opposite each other. The reception is located in the Altstadthotel building. It has a charming, antique, slightly old-fashioned, but cozy feel. The Hotel’s interior decor aims for romantic and classical elegance. I once applied for a job at the Wolf Dietrich Hotel in 2012 before I started working at the yoho hostel. I would have loved to work at the Wolf Dietrich hotel, but I loved working at the hostel even more. I couldn’t get used to wearing a suit and tie.
Wolf Dietrich hotel is on the upper end of Linzergasse, right where the old city wall was before it was demolished in the second half of the 19th century. Thus, it lies right on the old town’s border. Linzergasse leads to the Salzach river in about 10 minutes. That’s where you can either head into Mirabell garden, cross the street into Getreidegasse, the most famous street in Salzburg or join one of our free walking tours, which starts next to the bridge that connects the two sides of the river.
4. Hotel Stein: Adults-Only Rooftop Retreat
Hotel Stein is the ultimate location for travelers looking for a charming and intimate stay in the heart of Salzburg’s old town. Not only is it one of the best boutique hotels in Salzburg, but it’s also our neighbor! That’s right; Hotel Stein is just 50 meters from the Free Walking Tour meeting point and a mere 30 meters from the building where I live. Talk about convenience!
In 1399, the Hotel occupied the same spot in the Salzach valley. After refurbishing in 2018, it has now become a city hotspot again. It offers spectacular views of the old town and the fortress. It’s also within walking distance, just across the bridge, about 2 minutes walking, from Getreidegasse, Salzburg’s most famous old town street, and the house where he was born.
Book a stay at Hotel Stein, and not only will you have the best location in town, but you’ll also be able to easily join our Free Walking Tour. Plus, you’ll have the inside scoop on Salzburg’s best-kept secrets from your neighbor-slash-guide. Take advantage of this opportunity for the ultimate Salzburg experience. 5. Hapimag: A Haven for Independent Travelers
As a local guide, I have had the opportunity to visit and interact with many of the hotels in the old town of Salzburg. I recommend Hapimag Ferienwohnungen Salzburg. Not only is the location unbeatable, steps away from the Salzburg Cathedral (250 meters) and Mozart’s Birthplace (150), but the staff at the reception are some of the most helpful and friendly I have encountered in the city in more than a decade in Salzburg tourism.
Hapimag has a reception but actually offers apartments for rent, each equipped with a mini-kitchen complete with a fridge, microwave, and glassware and all the other amenities you need for a comfortable stay, including a TV, electronic key card, and a private bathroom with hairdryers. If you’re looking for a centrally located and comfortable place to stay in the heart of Salzburg’s old town, Hapimag is a perfect choice.
6. Radisson Blu Hotel: Experience Luxury with a Personal Touch
The Radisson Blu Hotel Altstadt is genuinely one-of-a-kind. Not only is it located in the heart of Salzburg’s UNESCO-designated Old Town, but its history can be traced back to the year 1377, when it was even used as a brewery to supply the city’s residents with beer.
But today, the Hotel offers guests so much more than just a glimpse into the past. With luxury, comfort, and service at the highest level, the Hotel’s unique and well-preserved historical details can be found throughout the property, from the rooms and suites to the public areas. Each room is special, making for an unforgettable stay.
And let’s remember the culinary delights offered by the Hotel’s restaurant. Exquisite dishes made with seasonal and regional ingredients, accompanied by hand-picked wines from Austria and around the world and a picturesque view of the Salzach river. Plus, the Hotel can accommodate seminars, business lunches, private parties, and even weddings, making it the perfect choice for any occasion.
But what makes this Hotel even more remarkable is its location, only 50 meters away from the end point of the Free Walking Tour, which makes it easy to explore all that Salzburg has to offer. So, whether you’re looking for a unique and historic place to stay or a venue for your next special event, the Radisson Blu Hotel Altstadt should be at the top of your list.
7. Sacher Salzburg: Stay in Austria’s Most Famous Hotel
In the heart of Salzburg’s old town, the Hotel Sacher Salzburg is one of Austria’s most iconic and luxurious hotels. Since the Hotel’s opening over 150 years ago, it has become a favorite among high-end travelers, with its elegant exterior and grand entrance hall. If you’re looking to indulge in a bit of luxury while staying in the old town of Salzburg, the Sacher is a perfect choice.
But let’s remember the real star of the show – the Sachertorte! If you’re a dessert lover, you can only leave Austria after trying this delicious chocolate cake. To learn more about Sachertorte, why the original might not be the best, and for other delicious Austrian desserts, check out our article on the subject of Austrian desserts.
The Hotel’s luxurious rooms and suites, each individually decorated with antique furniture and modern amenities, will make your stay unforgettable. Guests can also enjoy the Hotel’s spa facilities, which include a sauna, steam room, massage treatments, and fitness center. And, of course, the Hotel’s two restaurants serve traditional Austrian cuisine and international dishes, including the original Sachertorte cake.
For those looking to explore Salzburg’s historical sites, the Sacher Salzburg is conveniently located within walking distance of many attractions, such as Mozart’s Birthplace and Mirabell Palace & Gardens. Remember to check our article on luxury hotels in Salzburg for more information and inspiration.
8. Kasererbräu: Cinema and Comfort
Regarding hotels in Old Town of Salzburg, one of my favorites is the Kasererbräu. This unique gem is housed in a building dating back to 1350, and it is a true time capsule that gives you a glimpse of Salzburg’s rich history. But the real showstopper here is that it houses one of the oldest cinemas in the world, dating back to 1905. Imagine watching a movie in a building over 700 years old. Now that’s a true movie-going experience!
The Hotel itself is a mix of traditional, antique furniture and modern amenities, creating a cozy and charming atmosphere. Each room is individually decorated. Plus, the location is perfect for exploring the city. It’s located in the Kaigasse area, slightly off the beaten path but still only around the corner from the Mozart statue, where we finish our tours and where the tourist information is located, and 300 meters from the Cathedral.
9. ArtHotel Blaue Gans: Luxury Boutique Living in Perfect Location
The Old Town of Salzburg is home to some incredible Boutique Hotels. But if I had to pick just one that deserves the name Boutique Hotel, it would be the Arte Hotel Blaue Gans Salzburg. This 4-star Hotel is located in a 14th-century building only a few meters from Mozart’s birthplace. The location is unbeatable, and the style and atmosphere of the Hotel are amazing.
The Arte Hotel Salzburg stood out to me for its super-friendly reception. The Hotel refers to itself as an “urban hideaway”, and that’s precisely what it is. It has everything you need and more, from a rocket in the garden to the depths of Dante’s Inferno in the men’s bathroom. The Hotel is truly unique and is the perfect place to stay if you want to be in the heart of the Old Town and experience Salzburg’s rich history and culture.

10. Goldener Hirsch: Old World Charm at Traditional Luxury Hotel
If you’re looking for a truly authentic and luxurious experience in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town, look no further than the Hotel Goldener Hirsch. This Hotel offers a traditional Austrian experience like no other, complete with Lederhosen and Dirndl, just like in the Sound of Music! But don’t let the traditional exterior fool you, the Hotel underwent extensive renovations in 2020, preserving its original charm while adding modern luxury amenities.
The Hotel is housed in a 15th-century building. The decor features wooden floors, rustic decoration, and antique furniture, all created and renovated by local artisans and craftsmen. It has a history dating back over 400 years, making it one of the oldest hospitality businesses in the city.
The Hotel offers five-star luxury amenities, including a restaurant that serves traditional and authentic Austrian dishes. The Goldener Hirsch is genuinely one of a kind and provides a unique and unforgettable experience for those looking for a luxury hotel with a traditional Austrian touch. It’s a perfect balance between the traditional and the modern, and its location is just unbeatable.

11. Find Sanctuary at Sankt Sebastian Guesthouse
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly yet charming and authentic experience in Salzburg’s Old Town, Guesthouse Sankt Sebastian is a perfect choice. Located right next to the historic Sebastian’s Cemetery in Linzergasse, this unique guesthouse offers a simple yet charming atmosphere with a religious background. It’s ideal for those who want to experience a different side of Salzburg’s Old Town, away from the tourist crowds and amidst the peaceful surroundings of a historic cemetery. Plus, it’s where my mum used to work almost 50 years ago and where I sent over travelers when I worked at the yoho hostel when backpackers walked in without a reservation, and we were fully booked.
The guesthouse offers a variety of room types to choose from, including dormitory beds, cozy and budget-friendly single rooms, and double rooms with private bathrooms. They also have family-friendly options like triple and quadruple rooms, all with private bathrooms.
Guests can choose to book with or without breakfast. The guesthouse also features communal areas like a study room, music room, TV room, shared kitchens, laundry facilities, and a rooftop terrace where you can catch a great view of the city.
Overall, Guesthouse Sankt Sebastian is an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers looking for a unique and authentic experience in Salzburg’s Old Town. The guesthouse has a great location, charming atmosphere, and friendly staff that will make your stay in Salzburg unforgettable.

12. Steak and Storytelling at Stadtkrug Tavern Inn
I absolutely love the steak at the Stadtkrug Hotel! Nestled in the charming Linzer Gasse and located at the base of the Kapuzinerberg, this historic 14th-century building is a true gem in Salzburg’s Old Town. Not only is the atmosphere enchanting and magical, but the steak is absolutely to die for. I have yet to find a better steak in Salzburg.
The restaurant is not a hotel restaurant. If you are craving steak, go for it! They offer a few traditional dishes if you are curious about Austrian food. Be sure to check out our other articles for even more delicious insights into Austrian cuisine. Don’t miss out; start exploring now!
As you step inside the Hotel Stadtkrug, you will be transported back to Mozart’s era, with the rooms decorated with authentic designs but still equipped with modern amenities. It’s a blend of history and luxury. And the location is unbeatable, right at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg and in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town, only about two minutes from our meeting point.
I recommend this Hotel to anyone visiting Salzburg. While not a luxury hotel, it’s a true jewel with a unique style. The upscale lifestyle will captivate you, and the steak will leave you wanting more. It’s an authentic experience that you won’t find anywhere else.
13. Arte Vida: Find Inner Peace at the Yoga Guesthouse
The Arte Vida guesthouse is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. I, in fact, had the pleasure of sharing a garden with this charming guesthouse and Mozart’s residence for five years. The garden was divided into four parts, the guesthouse, Mozart’s residence, and my part.
I was in a separate section of the garden. Never would you expect to find an oasis like this behind an unassuming building in a busy Salzburg old town street. Still, I witnessed their monthly charity events and guests hanging out in their garden. Let me tell you, it will be a revelation when you step into that garden.
The guesthouse is housed in a historic building. It is the perfect choice for those looking for a relaxed, unique, and cozy atmosphere instead of traditional hotels. Their garden is one of the few green inner courtyard oases in the center of Salzburg, where guests can enjoy their breakfast, a cozy afternoon, or a warm summer night. The Arte Vida is truly a unique and special place to stay in Salzburg.
14. Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten: Experience the Seasons
If you’re looking for a hotel in Salzburg’s Old Town that feels like home, the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten (Four Seasons Hotel) is a great choice. This traditional 4-star Hotel is located in the heart of the city, just a stone’s throw away from all of Salzburg’s famous sights, including the Mirabell Palace, concert halls, and the Old Town’s charming boutiques. It’s located where the city wall once was, thus on the border of the old town.
When we visited to bring Free Walking Tour flyers on the 31st of December 2022, we were greeted by possibly the friendliest receptionist in Salzburg, who chatted with us about everything from working in different areas of Salzburg tourism. It was clear that the Hotel’s staff truly cared about their guests and wants to make their stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
The rooms are cozy and comfortable, and the breakfast buffet is extensive, with a variety of healthy and fresh food from the Salzburg area.
15. Hotel Goldgasse: Maze-Like Eccentric Hotel in a Small Alley
If you’re looking for a stylish and unique hotel experience in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town, the Hotel Goldgasse is a perfect choice. This 16-room boutique hotel is tucked away in a maze of historical streets and alleys, and even the architecture of the hotel interior is maze-like, making it a true hidden gem. Despite its central location, the Hotel is surprisingly quiet and peaceful, making it the perfect retreat after a busy day exploring the city.
Hotel Goldgasse is located only a minute from the Cathedral and two minutes from the Hohensalzburg Fortress. The Hotel’s modern decor is a refreshing contrast to the historical surroundings, and the rooms are well-appointed and comfortable. The only downside is that the Hotel doesn’t have air conditioning and there’s no parking available, but that’s to be expected in a historic building in the old town. Overall, the Hotel Goldgasse is a great choice for those looking for a unique and stylish hotel experience in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town.
